Taser Safety - What You Should Know

    Share

The main reason why people often carry equipment like tasers is for self defense. The increasing number of crimes going around can make you feel uneasy and unsafe. That is why it is important that you have a way to defend yourself, in case you become a target of an attack. However, with the use of this kind of self defense equipment, you should know how to properly handle and carry it.

A taser gun functions by incapacitating your attacker, by delivering flows of electricity within the body. This causes a disruption between the muscles and the nervous system, causing uncontrollable muscle contractions. This effect can last from several seconds to several minutes, giving you enough time to run away. Although it does not cause any permanent injury, you should still follow the safety standards when using it. This protects you and the people around you from any untoward incidents.

1. Know the laws and regulations for the use of such equipment - Although it is not as lethal as a hand gun, there are still certain laws regulations that affect the use of this kind of weapon. It is best to consult with your local law enforcement agency about the laws regarding its use, what kind of model is allowable for civilians, get a permit, etc. You should do this before buying one.

By following this advice, you can protect yourself from any penalty. Most countries and states often have different laws and regulations, so it's best to ask first before you bring it with you.

2. Avoid aiming at the eyes to prevent eye injury - In order to incapacitate an attacker, all you have to do is to point and shoot. As long as it touches the skin or the clothing of the attacker, you can be sure that they will be unable to move for awhile. Most taser guns can penetrate through 2 inches of clothing. Since it fires probes which attach to the attacker and deliver a wave of electricity, shooting in the eyes should be avoided. The probes fired from the equipment can penetrate to the eyes, causing temporary to permanent eye damage.

3. Fire the equipment at a distance - You don't need to be at close quarters with your attacker in order to deliver a successful electrical shock, unlike that of a stun gun. You can simply point and shoot at your attacker from a distance. Most often, you can stay 10 feet away from your attacker and still be able to deliver a shot that can disable your assailant. By doing it from a distance, you're keeping yourself away from their reach.

4. Run and call for help - Unlike hand guns that can leave a lasting destructive effect, the effects of tasers will only last for a short period of time ranging from a several seconds to minutes. That is why you need to use the opportunity of calling for help and/or running away while your attacker is down. This can allow you to be as far away as possible in case the attacker will be able to recover.
